Anyway, it can cause distress to the patient who wants to keep using slopes or if you want to restore the symmetry of their ears. Fortunately, there is a simple and effective procedure that can solve these problems. In some patients, the earlobe can be re – drilled on the day of operation.

Most cases of torn earlobes can be corrected safely through delicate surgical repair techniques. The ear lobe stretching repair procedure is routinely performed in the office under local anesthesia with optional sedation. After planning and marking, a small amount of lidocaine numbing solution is deposited. Earlobe correction surgery is carried out without any hassle. In order to reconstruct the earlobe, aspects of healing and scar need to be eliminated.

What is Ear Surgery?

If your child is self-conscious about large or protruding ears, consider ear surgery as an option. Protruding ears can be a source of teasing in your child’s life, which can lead to humiliation and embarrassment that carries over into adult life. By surgically reshaping ears in a procedure known as otoplasty, this condition can be greatly improved. Ears are typically developed by age 4 to 6, so consider having this surgery prior to your child starting school in an effort to eliminate teasing from classmates.

As you’ll see in these ear surgery before and after pictures, otoplasty can make a dramatic difference your or your child’s appearance. How is Ear Surgery Performed?

One ear surgery technique involves making a small incision in the back of the ear and sculpting the exposed cartilage before repositioning it closer to the head. Another popular technique involves removing the skin and folding back the cartilage, rather than removing it.

Depending on the severity of the case, total ear reconstruction may need to be utilized. In this case, your surgeon will develop a framework from the ribs, as well as skin grafting. Your surgeons will go over all of these options with you prior to surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery?

If you (or your child) are experiencing embarrassment or humiliation due to large, protruding or abnormally shaped ears, ear surgery may be right for you. Children are typically the best candidates, as their ears are extremely pliable and easier to shape. The earlier you can have this surgery, the better, as ears are typically done developing by age 4 through 6.

Recovery and Results

You can expect some swelling, numbness, discomfort or headaches following the procedure, which should dissipate in a few days. You’ll be given a bandage to wrap around your head, and you should refrain from any strenuous activity for several days. Most importantly, you’ll be advised to refrain from bending your ears for at least a month post surgery.

Ear surgery patients that we’ve treated over the years have been very happy with the results, as they are no longer embarrassed by their large or protruding ears. Their face is much more balanced, and they have an increase in self-esteem.
